My child, Sammy Martinez, graduated yesterday from South Texas College here in McAllen, Texas.I'm a proud mother! But there is something I have been waiting for a long time to get off my chest! And now is the time to say it! Here goes. Nineteen years ago, Sammy was diagnosed with "Mental Retardation" by child neurologist Dr. Sy at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Texas. I told Dr. Sy that he was wrong (at least I wished it to be) with the Autism diagnosis just one month before his third birthday. I remember Sammy going to the "Special Unit" at school at only the age of 3. I remember him being tested at age 6 with an IQ of 60. I remember getting a letter in the mail that he needs to go to an institution. I remember getting blamed for his Autism by in-laws (now my EX in-laws) for obviously doing something to cause this and not loving him enough. I was devastated! I remember my Mother concerned that Sammy didn't talk until the age of 5. I remember my father telling me he was going to be the smartest kid in the class!
Well, today, Sammy graduated with honors, magna cum laude, and if it wasn't for his 2 English classes, Sammy would have had summa cum laude. So, today, I cried because neither of my parents is alive to see him graduate. I cried because of all the years of dealing with those that didn't understand Autism. I cried for him taking 1 class at a time for it was all he could handle with all the stress and anxiety. I cried because I’ve waited years for this milestone. All these memories, all those obstacles that came forth today were jumped, but the only memory that matters is the fact that Sammy did it with a little help from those who cared. In the fall, Sammy will be heading to further his education at the University of TX, RGV. That day will come, but today I say, “Sammy did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Whoooooohoooooooo!!!!! AND I'M a PROUD MOTHER!!!!!!! Source: https://web.facebook.com/share/p/PMBdnoko9PQ246Hw/

Celebrate achievements
Santa's Littlest Elf (has Autism) idea for song lyrics was created by a child with Autism, Sam Martinez, on how Santa's sleigh flew in the sky. Sam said that Santa's sleigh can be harnessed by the Northern Lights in order to create energy to fly. Sam's mom, Amy Ames, took that idea and finished the song. Later, the Martinez family made a video on the song featuring the youngest, James Martinez, age 8. Voted the Cutest Christmas Video and Most Popular Video by Grand Channel Records, LLC and Disc Makers. In 2011 the song went viral and topped the charts at No. 5 in Europe.
